If your heat pump has stopped heating the house, or the hot water has gone cold, you want a straight answer and someone local who picks up the phone. Eco Air Source Heat Pump Installer is based in Walsall, and air source heat pump repair is part of what we do. We are open 7 days, 9am to 7pm, and you are welcome to visit our premises in WS1. What a Repair Visit Actually Involves

A heat pump moves heat from the outside air into your home using a refrigerant circuit, a compressor, fans, pumps, sensors and a controller. It also relies on your pipework, radiators or underfloor heating, and usually a hot water cylinder. When a heat pump is not working, the cause is often not the outdoor unit at all.

The usual suspects are:

  • Controls and settings: a thermostat, schedule or flow temperature that has been changed or has reset after a power cut.
  • Water side problems: low system pressure, air in the pipes, a blocked filter or a failing circulation pump.
  • Outdoor unit faults: a blocked or iced-up coil, a fan that won’t turn, or a sensor giving false readings.
  • Hot water issues: a cylinder immersion heater or motorised valve that has failed.
  • Error codes: the unit shuts itself down to protect the compressor and shows a code on the display.

Working out which of these you have takes a methodical check, not guesswork. We start with the simple, cheap possibilities and move on only when we have ruled them out.

Who Tends to Need This

Most calls come from a few familiar situations:

  • Homeowners whose heat pump has gone quiet, shows an error code or only blows lukewarm radiators.
  • Landlords in Walsall, Bloxwich, Willenhall, Aldridge, Brownhills and Darlaston with a tenant reporting no heating or hot water.
  • People who bought a house with a heat pump already fitted and have no paperwork or installer to call.
  • Households whose system was installed by a firm that has since closed or stopped answering.
  • Owners whose heat pump runs constantly but never seems to warm the house properly.

Step by Step: From First Call to Finished Job

  1. Phone call. You describe the symptoms, the make and model if you know it, and any codes on the display. We may suggest a safe check, such as looking at the system pressure or the thermostat settings.
  2. Free home survey. We visit, look at the outdoor unit, the controls, the pipework and the cylinder, and ask how the system has behaved recently.
  3. Diagnosis. We test the system properly and tell you in plain English what has failed, what is worn and what is fine.
  4. Written quote. You get the cost of the repair, any parts needed and what happens if you leave it. You decide in your own time.
  5. The repair. We fix the fault, replace parts where needed and check the system is filled, vented and running at the right settings.
  6. Test and handover. We run the unit, confirm heating and hot water are working, and show you what to look out for so you can spot a repeat problem early.

Where Hot Water Safety Comes In

Many heat pump systems heat water through a cylinder, and some of these are unvented, which means they hold water at mains pressure. Building Regulations Part G covers hot water safety, including safe temperatures and the safety devices on unvented cylinders. If your fault involves the cylinder, its valves or its controls, the work needs doing properly and the safety devices need checking afterwards. We never bypass a safety device to get a system running.

What You Gain From a Proper Fix

  • Comfort back quickly: a house that warms up and hot water that stays hot.
  • Lower running costs: the Energy Saving Trust says heat pumps are more than three times more efficient than a gas or oil boiler (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). A unit with a fault can lose much of that advantage, because it works harder for less heat.
  • Less risk of a bigger bill: a small fault caught early is usually cheaper than a failed compressor later.
  • Clear information: you know what failed, what it cost and whether anything else needs attention.
  • A local contact: you can call or visit us in Walsall if something is not right afterwards.

What Affects the Price

We do not quote repair prices over the phone, because a loose sensor and a failed compressor are very different jobs. The cost depends on:

  • the fault itself and how long it takes to find
  • the make, model and age of the unit, and whether parts are readily available
  • whether the problem is in the outdoor unit, the pipework or the cylinder
  • whether the system was installed or set up badly in the first place
  • access to the unit, for example a wall mounting or a tight side passage

The survey is free, and you receive a written quote before any work starts. Most diagnostic visits do not need the unit to be out of action for long, but we will give you a realistic timescale once we have seen it.

When Replacement Is Worth Considering

Occasionally a repair is not sensible, for example if the unit is badly damaged or a major part costs close to a new system. For comparison, the Energy Saving Trust gives a typical UK installation cost of around £12,000 (Energy Saving Trust, 2026), while Checkatrade puts supply and installation at between £3,000 and £15,000 on average, excluding extras such as new radiators (Checkatrade, 2026). We would only suggest replacement if the numbers genuinely point that way.

If you are replacing an old gas, oil, electric or LPG system rather than repairing a heat pump, homes in England and Wales can get £7,500 through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). That grant comes through our MCS-certified partner, who quotes, installs and applies on your behalf. It applies to replacing a fossil fuel heating system (GOV.UK, 2026), so it does not cover repairs to an existing heat pump.
