If you are looking into the Boiler Upgrade Scheme in Walsall, here is the short version. Homes in England and Wales can get £7,500 towards an air source heat pump (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). At Eco Air Source Heat Pump Installer, we are not MCS certified ourselves, so grant jobs go through our MCS-certified partner, who quotes, installs and applies for the grant on your behalf. This page explains who qualifies, how the referral works, the deadlines involved and what happens if you would rather install without the grant. No pressure, and no jargon.
Understanding the Grant
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme is a government grant that takes money off the cost of replacing a fossil fuel heating system with a heat pump. The value is deducted from what you pay for installation and shown on your quotation and invoice (GOV.UK, 2026). You do not pay the full price and wait to be reimbursed.
The grant is applied for through the Ofgem website by an MCS-certified installer, not by the homeowner (GOV.UK, 2026). That is why we pass grant jobs to our MCS-certified partner. They handle the quote, the installation and the application. Our job is to help you decide whether the grant route suits you, explain the costs in plain English, and make the handover easy.
Who Can Get the Grant
You can get a Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant if you own the property and are replacing a fossil fuel heating system such as oil, gas, electric or LPG (GOV.UK, 2026). The scheme is open to people in England and Wales, so Walsall and the rest of the West Midlands qualify.
Some properties are excluded. Most new build properties, social housing and properties already given government funding for a heat pump cannot get the grant (GOV.UK, 2026). Having had funding for energy efficiency work such as insulation does not rule you out (GOV.UK, 2026).
This suits homeowners with a gas boiler nearing the end of its life, households on electric storage heaters, and rural or edge-of-town properties running on oil or LPG. Landlords who own the property and are replacing a fossil fuel system should check the rules against their own circumstances. If you are unsure, call 01922 302461 and we will talk it through. The benefit is simple: you know where you stand before spending time on quotes.
How the Referral to Our MCS-Certified Partner Works
We start with a free home survey at your Walsall property. We look at the existing heating, radiators, where the outdoor unit could go and whether a hot water cylinder will fit. A cylinder can usually fit in any cupboard measuring at least 80cm x 80cm (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).
If you want the grant, we refer you to our MCS-certified partner. They produce the written quote, carry out the installation and apply for the grant on your behalf through Ofgem. The grant is taken off your price and shown on the quotation and invoice (GOV.UK, 2026).
We do not apply for the grant ourselves, and we do not claim to be MCS certified. We make the introduction and stay available by phone if you have questions along the way. The benefit to you is one clear route: a certified installer doing the paperwork, and a local team you can still ring or visit.
The 120-Day Window
Once the grant application is made, the heat pump must be installed and commissioned within 120 days (GOV.UK, 2026). Commissioning means the system has been fitted, tested and handed over working.
For most homes that is a workable timescale, but it means planning matters. If your property needs extras first, such as radiator upgrades or space prepared for a cylinder, those are best identified at the survey rather than halfway through the job. Your installer manages the timing, and a clear survey early on helps avoid delays.
Before applying, it helps to have these in order:
- Confirmation that you own the property
- A clear idea of what is being replaced
- Agreement on where the outdoor unit and cylinder will go
- A realistic start date
The benefit is peace of mind. You know the deadline in advance, and nothing about it should come as a surprise.
Installing Without the Grant
You do not have to use the grant. If you are not eligible, or you would rather not go through the scheme, we install the heat pump ourselves. That might suit a new build, a property you do not own, or someone who wants to move quickly.
Costs vary by property. Typical installed costs include around £12,000 (Energy Saving Trust, 2026) and £8,000–£14,000+ (Renewable Energy Hub, 2026). Without the grant, you pay the full installed price. We give you a written quote after the free survey, so you can compare it against any other.
The benefit is choice. You are not forced down one route, and we explain the trade-offs honestly either way.

- Handover. The system is commissioned and explained to you.
What You Gain
- A lower upfront cost if you qualify, with £7,500 taken off the installation price (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).
- Efficiency. Heat pumps are more than three times more efficient than a gas or oil boiler (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).
- Less paperwork. The certified partner makes the application for you.
- Local contact. We are Walsall-based, and you can visit us.
Costs and Timescales
Several published guides give ranges for installation, and they differ because properties differ:
- £3,000 to £15,000 on average, excluding extras such as radiator upgrades (Checkatrade, 2026)
- £5,000 to £15,000 (Worcester Bosch, 2026)
- £7,000 to £13,000 (Heatable, 2026)
What moves the price: property size, system design, the type of unit, cylinder requirements and radiator upgrades. Monobloc systems keep everything in one outdoor unit and are cheaper and quicker to install, while split systems can be slightly more efficient (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).
On running costs, electricity on standard tariffs is nearly four times more expensive than gas, so a heat pump can cost slightly more to run than a new gas or oil boiler. A heat pump time-of-use tariff can bring costs below a gas boiler (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).
A survey is free and covers your existing system, radiators, space for the unit and cylinder, and your hot water needs. Unvented cylinders must meet Building Regulations Part G for hot water safety. We cover this in your written quote.

Most installations are permitted development, so planning permission is not needed. If you live in a listed building or conservation area, check with your local planning department first (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).
Usually yes. A cylinder can generally fit in any cupboard of at least 80cm x 80cm (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). We check space at the survey. Unvented cylinders must comply with Building Regulations Part G.
No. We are not MCS certified. Grant jobs are referred to our MCS-certified partner, who quotes, installs and applies for the grant for you (GOV.UK, 2026).
The heat pump must be commissioned within 120 days of the grant application (GOV.UK, 2026). Your installer plans the schedule around this, which is why identifying any extra work at the survey matters.
