This page covers heat pump installation in plain English: what it costs, what it costs to run, who can get the grant, and whether your home is suitable.

What a Heat Pump Costs to Buy and Fit

Worcester Bosch puts the cost at between £5,000 and £15,000 to install (Worcester Bosch, 2026). The Energy Saving Trust puts the typical UK cost at around £12,000 (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). Published guides vary because homes vary, so here is how several sources compare:

  • Worcester Bosch says £5,000 to £15,000 (Worcester Bosch, 2026).
  • Heatable says around £7,000 to £13,000, depending on property size, system design and upgrades (Heatable, 2026).
  • Renewable Energy Hub says £8,000 to £14,000 or more installed (Renewable Energy Hub, 2026).
  • Checkatrade says £3,000 to £15,000 for supply and installation, not including extras such as upgrading radiators (Checkatrade, 2026).

The spread comes from the size of your home, how well it holds heat, the type of unit and whether you need a new cylinder or larger radiators. We would rather survey your home and give you a written figure than guess over the phone.

Running Costs and Efficiency

A heat pump can cost a little more to run than a new gas or oil boiler on a standard tariff, but a time-of-use tariff can bring it below gas. The Energy Saving Trust says electricity is nearly four times more expensive than gas on standard tariffs, while heat pumps are more than three times more efficient than a gas or oil boiler (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). It also says a heat pump time-of-use tariff can bring running costs below those of a gas boiler (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).

So the answer depends on your tariff and how your home is set up. If you are replacing oil, LPG or electric heating, the comparison can look different from gas, and we will talk it through with you honestly.

The £7,500 Grant and How It Works

Homes in England and Wales can get £7,500 towards an air source heat pump through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (Energy Saving Trust, 2026). We are not MCS certified, so if you want the grant, we refer you to our MCS-certified partner. They quote, install and apply for the grant on your behalf. If you do not need the grant, we install the heat pump ourselves.

The main rules, all from GOV.UK (2026):

  • You must own the property and be replacing a fossil fuel system such as oil, gas, electric or LPG.
  • Most new builds, social housing and homes already given government funding for a heat pump are not eligible.
  • Earlier funding for insulation or similar energy efficiency work does not rule you out.
  • The grant is taken off what you pay and shown on your quotation and invoice.
  • The heat pump must be installed and commissioned within 120 days of the application.

Our heat pump grants page goes through the process step by step.

Is Your Home Suitable?

Most homes can take a heat pump, though some need extra work. Three things come up most often:

  • Space for a cylinder. A hot water cylinder can usually fit in any cupboard measuring at least 80cm x 80cm (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).
  • Planning. Most installations are permitted development and need no planning permission. If you live in a listed building or a conservation area, check with your local planning department first (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).
  • Unit type. Monobloc heat pumps keep everything in one outdoor unit and are cheaper and quicker to install, while split systems can be slightly more efficient (Energy Saving Trust, 2026).

  1. You call or send a request. Calling is quickest. We are open 7 days and will talk through your situation.
  2. We visit for a free home survey. We look at your current heating, your radiators, your hot water and where a unit could sit.
  3. You get a written quote. It sets out the work and the price in plain English, with the grant taken off if you go through our MCS-certified partner.
  4. You decide in your own time. There is no pressure, and you are welcome to drop into our Walsall premises to talk it over.
  5. We install, or our partner does. If you are not using the grant, we carry out the work ourselves. For grant jobs, our MCS-certified partner installs and handles the application.
